What standardized tests are available?

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) http://www.collegeboard.org/clep and Dantes Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) http://www.getcollegecredit.com/ are the most widely accepted credit-by-examination programs in the United States today. Through CLEP and DSST standardized exams, students of all ages earn college degrees faster by receiving credit for what they already know. Through CLEP and DSST exams, students can:

  • Accumulate credit toward a degree by demonstrating knowledge gained independently, start studies at a higher level, and save valuable time and money. This is often the extra incentive needed for working adults to begin or return to college.
  • Show competence in a subject to determine placement, particularly for foreign language courses.
  • Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of a subject area to earn exemption from an introductory course.

More than 2,800 colleges and universities now award credit for satisfactory scores on CLEP and DSST exams. Since 1967, CLEP has administered more than 4 million exams to 3 million candidates. Over 80,000 individuals, particularly adults who are interested in continuing their education, take DSST annually and receive college credit.

Northern Essex Community College awards credit for both CLEP and DSST tests in certain predetermined subjects. The Center for Adult and Alternative Studies (CAAS) helps to identify which of these standardized exams would support the student’s life learning experience and their personal education plan. CAAS will direct the student toward publications that will assist them in preparing for their exam. Subject areas include Business, Computers, English, Mathematics, Humanities, Foreign Languages, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and History. Information concerning administration of CLEP and DSST standardized tests can be obtained from CAAS by contacting Bonnie Doherty at 978-556-3448, bdoherty@necc.mass.edu.

Northern Essex Community College awards CLEP credits and DSST credits earned by the achievement of the required scores recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE). ACE score recommendations are used as a guide by the academic areas in identifying which exams and exam scores are equivalent to NECC courses. Students are encouraged to check specific CLEP test score and DSST test score requirements through CAAS, their advisor, or the appropriate academic area prior to taking the exam.
