English language courses for students who are deaf and hard of hearing are provided in a two-semester sequence designed to help students strengthen their skills in reading and English structure in order to prepare them for further academic work, to enter the work force, or for self improvement.  The courses are at the developmental level and do not carry graduation credit.

Course Descriptions

DHH016 English Structure I

This course is designed to help deaf and hard of hearing students develop competency in using correct grammatical English structure in writing.  Topics covered include parts of speech, simple verb tenses, question formation, simple and compound sentences, and sentence mechanics.

DHH017 Reading I

This course is designed to help deaf and hard of hearing students develop the reading skills necessary for success in college-level work.  This will be accomplished through intensive vocabulary study and will progress from literal understanding of what is read to higher levels of comprehension including finding main ideas and identifying supporting details.

DHH018 English Structure II

This course is designed to help deaf and hard of hearing students develop competency in using more advanced English structures in their writing.  Topics covered include a review of structures studied in DHH016 English Structure I, complex verb tenses, active and passive voice, gerunds and infinitives, appositives, and adjective and noun clauses.

DHH019 Reading II

This course is designed to build on the skills developed in DHH017 Reading I.  This will be accomplished through advanced vocabulary study and comprehension strategies including making inferences and finding implied main ideas.
