Liberal Arts: Theater Option
Theater is a collaborative art, so there are many options open to you if you wish to work in it. While most people think of the actors, there are also many positions for artists, managers and technicians. Few other professions offer the rich satisfaction of working as a team to create a product that communicates with and entertains an audience.
Work in the theater is not for those who seek an easy road to financial security.
NECC’s Associate Degree in Liberal Arts: Theater Option offers you the opportunity to sample various aspects of theater. You can take courses in acting, directing, improvisation, children’s theater and may earn credits for working on college productions in stage management and technical theater. Theater study and experience is appropriate for you whether you are interested in working in the theater professionally, or simply seeking elective credits.
Graduates will be able to pursue many career paths. You may choose to transfer on to a bachelor’s program in acting, directing or technical theater. You could seek employment as an actor, theater manager, house manager, stage manager, set, lighting, costume or sound designer, technical director, or scenic artist director. Your two-year associate degree may prepare you for some of these careers, while others will require additional education, such as a four-year bachelor’s degree or higher. If you wish to go on in other fields such as education, law, management or communications, you can begin as a theater major, then transfer to programs offered at four-year institutions.
