Deaf Studies
If you would like your career to include providing services to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community, Northern Essex offers several options for you to choose from.
The Deaf Studies Program at NECC features options to either enter the workforce directly or transfer to a four-year bachelor’s degree program. If you want to enter the workforce directly, you can prepare for a career as an interpreter or work as a direct service provider to the Deaf community in group homes, independent living facilities, or state agencies. If you want to transfer and earn your bachelor’s degree, you can bring your American Sign Language competency to your profession (as a teacher, human/social service professional, medical professional, etc.) in order to more effectively serve Deaf community members.
Students pursuing fall 2012 enrollment must have completed Elementary ASL 101 and Elementary ASL 102 prior to registration.
Prospective students who have acquired American Sign Language outside of NECC must have an ASL assessment before May 1, 2012. To schedule an ASL assessment, please email deafstudies@necc.mass.edu.
Please note: Changes are coming to this program. For more information, please email deafstudies@necc.mass.edu or call Maureen Lundergan at 978-556-3667.
