Is there a subject that you particularly enjoy? Can you envision sharing your interest with young people? Do the joys and challenges of teaching appeal to you? If so, you might want to consider a career as a middle or high school teacher.
At Northern Essex, the Associate Degree in Liberal Arts: Middle or High School Teaching Option will begin your preparation for a career in the field of education. The program provides broad coursework in the arts and sciences as the foundation for further study at a four-year college. In addition, through education-related classes, you will integrate theory and practice, acquire knowledge of child growth and development, and develop sensitivity to and appreciation for the wide diversity of children in our public schools today. The Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks will be an important reference in the education classes, but this program is relevant for students who intend to teach in New Hampshire, or other states, as well.
Graduates will be able to pursue a number of career paths. Upon completion of the program, you can seek employment as a paraprofessional (teaching assistant). You may also choose to transfer to a bachelor’s program to become qualified to seek employment as a licensed teacher.
