Photography Program

Are you interested in photography as a career or passionate hobby? Do you want to take consistently better photographs? This program of photography classes offers the flexibility to either take class of your particular interest or step through all of the skill-building modules for a complete learning experience. You will learn from hands-on projects and review sessions.  You will master the necessary camera functions to create beautiful imagery.  Technique, mechanical control and a deep exploration of light are the cornerstones of the classes below.

Make sure to sign up early! These photography classes fill very quickly due to their popularity.

Students who successfully complete Basic Photography, Beyond Basic Photography, Intro to Adobe CS5 Photoshop, and Creative Black and White may also earn 3 credits (as the equivalent of ART130) applicable toward their NECC associate degree or certificate program. 


Basic Photography

Come learn the basic skills involved in photography, such as camera skills and the use of light, exposure, and composition. Although this class is designed primarily for students just entering into photography for a hobby it also can be a refresher class. This class will also include projects to be done in between the classes. You bring in your prints of your photography projects for discussion. Bring your SLR (non-digital or digital) camera, accessories, manual, and notebook. Please read your manual before class.

Beyond Basic Photography

A project based class geared for you to continue and expand on your learning about lighting techniques. You will learn to “see” light, which will change the way you take photos and enhance your skills as a photographer. A series of assignments will step you through the process of recognizing various lighting situations and using them as a compositional tool. This class is the next step for basic photography students or those who have a fundamental knowledge of their camera functions. Bring your SLR (non-digital or digital) camera and accessories.

Artist to Entrepreneur

Are you starting or expanding a business involved in the creative arts?  Whether a photographer, graphic designer, artist or craftsperson, you’ll learn critical elements to start or expand your business, including marketing and sales strategies, budgeting and financial recordkeeping.  Particular attention is paid to the highly personal, creative nature of your products and the unique challenges determining fair market prices.

Intro to Flash Photography

An introduction to the basic techniques of using flash as a primary and secondary light source.  Flash and its effects on your imagery will be explored through projects and classroom discussion.  Advanced Light projects will explore the more creative ways—such as racking, panning, and writing with light—to push the boundaries of available light.

Intro to Adobe CS5 Photoshop

Explore the fundamentals of Photoshop CS5 software and image editor using concepts like layers, selections, layer masks and using type to build a foundation in techniques for editing your photographic images for web and print.  Bring your own flash drive.

Creative Black and White

Black-and-white photography has always been regarded as a photographic art of its own.  Learn to see in black and white, expand your visual interest, and use camera controls and exposure techniques to capture workable image files for the B&W process.  Students should have basic understanding of photographic principles.  Required equipment: DSLR camera , tripod, laptop or home computer loaded with editing software (Lightroom 4 or 5).

Portraits

Explore fundamental elements of creating beautiful and unique portraiture.  Learn to create successful portraits that show the glimpse of human nature by using posing for different body styles, blended lighting techniques.  Students should have basic understanding of photographic priniciples.  Required equipment: DSLR camera and tripod (external flash is suggested).
