Photography

Are you interested in photography as a career or passionate hobby? Do you want to take consistently better photographs? This program of photography classes offers the flexibility to either take class of your particular interest or step through all of the skill-building modules for a complete learning experience. You will learn from hands-on projects and review sessions. You will master the necessary camera functions to create beautiful imagery. Technique, mechanical control, and a deep exploration of light are the cornerstones of the classes.

Students who successfully complete Basic Photography, Beyond Basic Photography, Creative Black and White  and Intro to Adobe CS5 Photoshop may also earn 3 credits (as the equivalent of ART 130) applicable toward their NECC associate degree or certificate program.

Basic Photography

Come learn the basic skills involved in photography, such as camera skills, the use of light, exposure, and composition. Although this class is designed primarily for students just entering photography as a hobby, it also can be a refresher class. This class will include projects to be done between class meetings. You will bring prints of your photography projects for discussion. Bring your SLR (non-digital or digital) camera, accessories, camera manual, and a notebook. Read your manual before class.

Beyond Basic Photography

A project-based class geared for you to continue and expand on your learning about lighting techniques. You will learn to “see” light, which will change the way you take photos and enhance your skills as a photographer. A series of assignments will step you through the process of recognizing various lighting situations and using them as a compositional tool. This class is the next step for basic photography students or for those who have a fundamental knowledge of their camera functions. Bring your SLR (non-digital or digital) camera and accessories.

Creative Black and White

Black and White has always been regarded as a photographic art all its own. Learn to see in black and white, expand your visual interest, and use camera controls and exposure techniques to capture workable image files for the B&W process.  Students should have basic understanding of photographic principles. Required equipment: DSLR camera, tripod, computer loaded with Light Room 4 or 5.

Intro to Adobe CS5 Photoshop

Explore the fundamentals of Photoshop CS5 software and image editor using features like layers, selections, layer masks, and type to build a foundation in techniques for editing your photographic images for web and print. Bring your own USB flash drive.

Intro to Flash Photography

An introduction to the basic techniques of using flash as a primary and secondary light source. Flash and its effects on your imagery will be explored through projects and classroom discussion. Advanced light projects will explore more creative approaches—such as racking, panning, and writing with light—to push the boundaries of available light. Bring your SLR (non-digital or digital) camera and accessories.
