Interior Decoration Certificate Program

This program is for you if you’re interested in entering the decorating field or just want more knowledge of interior decoration principles. Take only those courses that interest you or complete five courses (the Fundamentals of Interior Decoration plus 4 courses) to earn the certificate. This program also prepares you to become a Certified Professional Decorator through the Decorator’s Alliance of North America.

 Finishing Touches:  Using Accessories

Accessorizing a room completes the room’s design and takes it from ordinary to WOW!  But just how do you add the right finishing touches to add pizzazz and reflect the client’s personality?  Learn about size, scale, types, selection and placement of accessory items such as rugs, wall and shelf art, lighting, plants, linens, and more.

 The Fundmentals of Interior Decoration*

This hands-on course provides a broad overview of the fundamental process, tools, concepts, principles and language of interior decoration, including color theory and psychology, furniture styles and placement. It also provides the underpinning for all other courses in the program and is a requirement for the certificate of completion.

Visual Merchandising*

Discover the subliminal eff*ects created by visual merchandising in retail, residential, and commercial settings. Explore core concepts by analyzing retail store environments with emphasis on interior displays, color, fixturing, lighting, and branding.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in a professional visual merchandising installation project.

Window Treatments, Bedding, and Upholstery*

Learn the styles, trends, and suitability of various soft and hard window treatment options to change the look and feel of every room. Includes fabric selection, yardage calculations, installation requirements, sourcing materials, and workrooms, plus exploration of the income potential of this specialty area. While the emphasis is on window treatments, you’ll also explore how to coordinate bedding and use upholstery to create a spectacular look.


Staging and Room Makeover Intensive*

Learn to use existing furniture along with basic staging and interior decoration principles plus color tips to stage a home for sale and to make over rooms to be more attractive and functional. You’ll also explore pricing, business practices, layering, services, and more.

The Basics of Drafting Interior Floor Plans for Decorators NEW!*

Learn the basics decorators need to know about hand drafting, including tools of the trade, measuring, drafting symbols, and scale, plus drawing interior floor plans, elevations, and sections. Completion of Fundamentals of Interior Decoration or the equivalent is strongly recommended.

Creating Effective Interior Design/Decoration Presentations*

Explore the process, tools, skills and strategies required to create presentations that effectively convey your design concept. You’ll develop a project concept, compile the necessary items to convey the design intent, and present your concept.  Digital conceptual 2D and 3D options using SketchUp and graphic/hand drawing and sketching will be explored. Completion of Fundamentals of Interior Decoration or equivalent is required. Additional materials required; instructor will share list in the first class.

Intro to DreamDraper*

DreamDraper software helps you easily create professional, true-to-life drawings that provide you and your clients with fabulous visuals. You’ll learn and use its basic functions and explore its window treatment, floor planning, and accessorizing design capabilities. Requires computer literacy.  Materials fee includes DreamDraper software for personal use plus for upcoming courses in the series.
