Learning Communities Descriptions
INTEGRATED
Comparing Civilizations I
This Learning Community will integrate World Civilization I and World Literature I and focus on the period from pre-history to about 1600. We will use literary texts to better understand the cultures that produced them and we will use historical texts to shed light on the literature. Most importantly, students will be actively engaged in understanding the relationship between the two disciplines, and in understanding their own roles as learners. We will all work to create a supportive community for learning.

Introduction to Creativity: Reading and Writing
This learning community will strengthen students’ reading and writing skills according to the Basic Reading and Basic Writing Curricula, and will integrate reading and writing activities through the theme of creativity. Reading and Writing Toward Home
Closely linking the theme of home and self discovery this learning community will focus on strengths and community. Together we will read and write about home and personal growth. The theme of all assignments will be centered on what home means to students and how we can bring home with us where ever we are. Students will also find out their top strengths using an innovative survey developed by Gallup. It is our hope that students who complete the courses will gain a deeper understanding of themselves and what home means to them and to others in their community.

Writing America
The ability to write well about academic subjects like history is key to succeeding in college. Writing America, which pairs English Composition I and U.S. History I has two goals: 1) Students will sharpen and develop writing skills by engaging with the evidence in U.S. history; and 2) Develop skills in analyzing historical evidence and present those findings in analytic essays, presentations and other formats.

ALPHA Lawrence
Alpha Lawrence is a sister learning community to Alpha Haverhill and links Basic Reading, Basic Reading Lab, and Basic Writing. Students will explore the connections between reading and writing in a learner-centered, cooperative environment that fosters a successful transition to and continuation of the community college experience. We will collaborate on reading and writing tasks including the research for and the writing of the Opinion/Research (Essay #5) end of the semester paper due in Basic Writing. The Alpha Lawrence Learning Community will use the stories of ordinary people shared in the book, Listening Is an Act of Love, to read and write about themes such as families, work and dedication, journeys, history and struggle, and fire and ice (or emergency situations such as 911). Alpha Lawrence students must also register for Basic Reading Lab (REA012).
