Why should I study abroad?
In today’s world, it is not possible to remain geographically isolated. Events in one part of the world are quickly felt in others. Business activities regularly cross international boundaries. Even within our own country, sensitivity to other cultures is needed. The ability to speak a foreign language and to interact knowledgeably and comfortably with people of diverse cultures increases potential job opportunities and enriches one’s life.
Who can study abroad?
Study abroad programs are available to students who have completed at least one semester of study and have earned at a 2.5 or better grade point average. Students in most fields of study will be able to find programs that will allow them to take courses that will fit into their curriculum.
Where can I go?
Students may study in the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Spain and Switzerland. In past years, Northern Essex students have participated in programs in England, France, Ecuador and Spain among others.
Do I need to speak the language of the country I choose?
Most programs do not require that you speak the language of the country you will be visiting. However, during the time abroad, you will normally be expected to study the language as well as the history and culture of the country you are visiting.
Where will I live?
Many programs offer several housing options. Frequently, dormitory accommodations are available. In some cases, assistance is provided in locating a nearby apartment that can be shared with other students. Some students choose to stay with a host family in order to increase their interaction with both the language and culture.
What does it cost?
The cost varies widely depending on the country and program selected. On average, a student can expect to pay approximately $6000-$7000 plus airfare and personal expenses.
Is financial aid available?
Students who qualify for financial aid may receive funding while studying abroad. It is important to contact the Financial Aid Office early in order to determine the extent of the grant and to insure that all of the necessary paperwork is in order.
How do I apply?
You will complete your application process here at Northern Essex. You must fill out an application form, provide a copy of your transcript and obtain recommendations from three faculty members.
Where do I get more information?
Marcy Yeager, is available to assist you in all aspects of the study abroad process. She is located in the Science Building in office E259. You may also contact her by phone at (978) 556-3326 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We recognize that for financial and family reasons, many students cannot take a semester or a year to study abroad. Therefore, each year, Northern Essex offers at least one short-term travel study program. Each trip is approximately 10 days in length. Students will enroll in a Northern Essex course and will meet together on 2-3 occasions (usually Saturdays) before departure and at least once on return to the U.S. While abroad, lectures (often with faculty from the host country as well as the Northern Essex faculty member) and field trips will occupy part of each day. While students will have some free time to explore on their own, these trips are designed to be academic experiences, not vacations. In the last two years, trips have taken place to Ireland and Costa Rica.
What do these trips cost?
An effort is made to keep the cost of the trips as low as possible. The usual cost is between $1500 and $2000, not including tuition. Financial aid can be used to cover the tuition portion of the course but not travel expenses.
When do the trips take place?
Usually the trips occur at the end of May, right after graduation. In the future, trips may also take place in January during the semester break and in March during the spring vacation.
How do I get more information on upcoming trips?
