Each state may have its own requirements for testing, so be sure to check your state’s requirements before you schedule an appointment to take the test.
Scheduling a HiSET® exam is an important first step toward achieving your high school equivalency credential, and we want to make sure that you have the tools you need to prepare. The HiSET program offers free and low-cost options to familiarize you with both the exam questions and the computer-delivered testing experience.
HiSET Math Prep at Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill Campus, SC-215, Thursday’s 1-3 PM by appointment only. Call Nancy Carroll, Clerk III, (978) 556-3458 to schedule an appointment.
This program provides basic skill instruction in Language Arts Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies and Math to prepare adult learners to obtain their high school credential and to succeed in their next steps, whether college, further training, employment, or personal goals. These programs help adult learners develop the skills, knowledge and confidence that will serve them in their roles as family members, parents, community members and employees, as well as with post-secondary education and training.
This program offers 2 levels: Pre-HiSET and HiSET. Click here for additional information.
Note: All test preparation PDFs on this page are accessible by screen readers. For additional test preparation materials in accessible formats, see Disability Accommodations.
Watch this brief video (Flash) to learn more about how to create an account, schedule an appointment and take the HiSET exam. You’ll also learn about the computer screens and navigation for the computer-delivered test that is offered at some test centers.
You can use the Study Companion to familiarize yourself with the test content, test question formats and available study resources for each subtest. Download the Study Companion (PDF).
You can experience what it is like to take the HiSET exam by taking these free, 30–45-minute practice tests. Each subtest is half the length of the actual test and includes directions as well as an answer key. Questions are similar to those on the subtests, so you find out how ready you are and where you might need additional preparation.
See examples of the types of questions that will appear on the five subtests. Correct answers with explanations are included. Download the Sample Questions (PDF).
Find helpful tips and strategies to help you get ready for the exam, including how to organize your time both before and during the exam. See Tips for Getting Ready.
