Northern Essex Community College offers FREE classes in both Amesbury and Lawrence, Massachusetts.

The NECC Adult Learning Center is administered by Northern Essex Community College as part of the Developmental Studies department. It is a free, non-credit program funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education. Located at the Amesbury Middle School in Amesbury, MA and the Lawrence Extension (Louise Haffner Fournier Education) Campus of Northern Essex Community College, the program provides 3 levels of classroom instruction in reading, writing, mathematics and basic computer skills. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Workplace Education classes, and a Transition to College program funded by the Nellie Mae Foundation are also offered.

The NECC Adult Learning Center serves adults who live in Massachusetts. We are committed to:

  • Educating adult learners at all levels, from basic skills to GED preparation and college preparation
  • Recognizing and respecting the diversity of our students
  • Providing students with individual attention in small classes
  • Providing a non-threatening learning environment
  • Encouraging life-long learning

What is Adult Basic Education?

Adult basic education (ABE) services teach adults who lack high school level skills.

ABE includes English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), General Education Diploma programs (GED) and adult basic education (non-reader to GED). Targeted services in Workforce Development, Family Literacy and Transition to Higher Education are also included. ABE services include classroom instruction, one-to-one tutoring, and computer-assisted instruction.

Classes are offered in the Spring and Fall semesters.
