How to Apply for Financial Aid:
REQUEST that a Financial Aid Transcript (FAT) be sent to every college that you are applying to -- and from every college you have attended. Contact NECC’s Financial Aid Office for information.
- REMEMBER the financial aid deadline -- apply as early as February 1st for fall admission.
- DON’T assume that you cannot afford to further your education.
- DON’T let the high cost of attending a four-year college intimidate you.
- DON’T assume that you are not eligible for financial aid at a four-year college just because you did not receive aid at NECC
EXPLORE
THE POSSIBILITIES:
There are three basic types of financial aid:
Public
Institutional
Private
1. PUBLIC:
You must complete a Financial Aid Form (FAFSA) to determine your eligibility for types-of-need based public funding. You can pick up this form at NECC’s Financial Aid Office. The types of public-funded aid are:
- Grants & Scholarships -- money that you do not have to pay back. See NECC’s Financial Aid Office for possible scholarships for our graduates.
- Loans -- pay for college costs, but must be repaid at a very low interest rate and on a reasonable payment schedule after you complete your education.
- Work-Study -- you need to refer to your college’s Work-Study office.
2. INSTITUTIONAL AID:
Provided by individual college based on need or merit. You may be required to complete additional institutional financial aid forms.
3. PRIVATE:
Supported by either private organizations (Business, Unions, etc.) or by non-profit groups. It is your responsibility to find and apply for these; they are based on various personal categories that you may fit.
Hints for your private Financial Aid search:
- The Chamber of Commerce in your hometown will have information on awards sponsored by local businesses, organizations, local companies or civic groups.
- Your local library will have information regarding scholarships within your community.
- The Guidance Counselors at the high school you graduated from may know of special sources of aid just for students from your community.
- Trust Departments at local banks often manage scholarship funds reserved for graduates from the local high schools or community.
- Your employer or your parent’s employer(s) frequently have scholarships available for their members or the children of their members.
