2009 NECC Track and Field Outlook/Results of Competitions
The track and field team returns three sophomores that will lead a promising 2009 season. Shana Blaney, Sara Giannasca, and Shane Lee return to finish their stellar NECC careers.
Shana, a Triton High graduate, was a member of the inaugural 2006 team and played a huge role in the women’s placing 4th at the Northeast District Championships. With no high school experience in the sport, Blaney became the NJCAA Northeast District Champion in both the shot put and discus. She scored in almost every invitational entered and later went on to place at the NJCAA Nationals in both events. Blaney hopes to contend for All-American honors.
With a two year layoff from the sport, 2006 Dracut High star, Sara Giannasca helped rewrite the record books by breaking the school record in the 200 m. dash that was formerly held by basketball/track and field star, Crystal Burgess. Giannasca placed 5th and 7th in the 100 m. and 200 m. dashes at the Northeast District Meet. Her top finish as the NJCAA Nationals was in the 100 m. dash where she placed 10th.
2009 Track and Field Team
The goal of Coach Caputo’s last year was to improve the team performance in the short sprint events. Improve they did with the superlative performance by 2006 Triton High School football/track star, Shane Lee. Lee was the 2006 Eastern Massachusetts Division III 200 m. champion. After a year in Minnesota playing football, Lee decided to return to MA. It was a matter of time before Lee returned to form setting the 100 and 200 meter school records and winning the Corsair, Silfen, and Brown Invitationals. Lee’s top performance came at the NJCAA Northeast Districts where he ran a superb 11.08 placing 5th in the 100 m. dash. At the NJCAA Nationals, where he was seeded 8th, Lee stunned the field with an outstanding start and led the race for 60 meters finishing fourth and just missing All-American honors. Lee also hopes to compete in the long jump this year.
Other members expected to contribute to the team’s success this year is long sprinters, Zach Blinn (Timberlane HS, NH) and Michael Guay (Sanborn Regional). Coach Caputo has high hopes for freshman Pat Nett who will compete in the 110 MH and 400 M hurdle events. Also, bringing experience to the sprint/jump corp will be Methuen High School’s Amadyson Rafael. New to the sport are Alex Shauri and Charlie Ferreira who will be competing in the throws/sprints respectively.
