As another flu season begins, it is important to know the facts to protect your health and the health of those around you. The flu (influenza) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, producing a high temperature, sore throat, running nose, headache, dry cough, and muscle pain. The illness is widespread, especially during the winter months. It can sometimes be fatal.

Various flu forms that circulate each year are known as seasonal flu. Because viruses mutate constantly, new forms appear from time to time.
