Boatwise Marine Training

Partners: Boatwise Marine Training

Northern Essex Community College and Boatwise Marine Training – a private marine training firm – have teamed up to provide a ten-credit course on marine piloting and navigation that is U.S. Coast Guard approved preparation for the Master 100 Gross Ton License. This course meets the need for licensed pilots of vessels that carry more than six passengers for hire up to 200 miles offshore. It is aimed particularly at helping retiring veterans of the Coast Guard and Navy transition to civilian work that uses their marine experience.

Disney College Program

Partners: Walt Disney Theme Parks and Resorts

The Disney College Program allows NECC students to gain experience working in Orlando, Florida with one of the premier service companies in the world. For over two decades, students from Northern Essex have spent a semester or longer working at one of the Disney World theme parks or resorts. Recently, an articulation agreement between NECC and Disney was signed that allows students to take some college level courses offered at Disney for NECC credit. Students, therefore, can continue to pursue
their education goals while gaining work experience.

Electronic Equipment Technology Certificate Onsite at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems

Partners: Raytheon

Nineteen electronics workers at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems’ Andover plant are now enrolled in Northern Essex Community College’s Electronic Equipment Technology certificate program, which is being offered onsite at Raytheon. For the next 14 months, these employees will be taking college-credit courses, leading to a college certificate and possible job promotions.

Workforce Competitive Trust Fund Implementation Grant: Hospitality

Partners: Commonwealth Corporation, North Shore Community College, Middlesex Community College

The Northeast Partnership for Hospitality and Tourism – comprised of North Shore, Northern Essex, and Middlesex Community Colleges as well as a host of area businesses in the hospitality field – is embarking on an 18-month project to serve both potential new workers as well as incumbent workers in the hospitality industry in the general Northeast region of Massachusetts. This project is result of a planning grant received in FY’07.
