Respiratory Care, Polysomnography

Provides a fundamental study of respiratory physiology and related anatomy, including an introduction to renal function, acid base balance, and hemodynamic measurements. This course is required for respiratory and polysomnography program majors, but is open to other health or science majors.

This course introduces the profession of respiratory care. Content includes the professional and regulatory agencies that govern practice; legal issues and communication in the clinical setting; medical record documentation; gas laws that govern respiratory care modalities, and the physiologic basis for medical gas, humidity and aerosol therapy; and, bronchopulmonary hygiene.

This course builds on the principles of basic respiratory care by presenting more complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Course content includes pulmonary function testing, clinical laboratory data, airway management, and an introduction to mechanical ventilation.

RSC101 Fundamentals of Respiratory Care I Minimum Grade of: C

Presents the general principles of pharmacology and action of the major respiratory drugs. In addition, the anatomy and physiology of the autonomic nervous system and its role in drug action will be covered. Drugs will be studied as groups and individually for site and mechanism of action, contraindications and side effects, clinical uses and routes of administration.

An introductory course in the pathology and treatment of those diseases and injuries that impair cardiorespiratory function. The role of the respiratory therapist in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabiitaton of the patient, as well as the ability to work within the parameters of a Therapist Driven Protocol (TDP) and to develop a care plan is emphasized.

This course introduces the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures used in the delivery of respiratory care services. content includes medical gas therapy; humidity and aerosol therapy; basic patient assessment; bronchopulmonary hygiene; basic airway care; sterilization; and infection control.

This course continues study of the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures used in the delivery of respiratory care services. Content includes pulmonary function testing, arterial blood gas sampling, artificial airways, and mechanical ventilation. Emphasis is place on critical think and decision-making skills.

This course introduces students to the clinical environment and the practice of respiratory care. Clinical competencies include communication with the patient and members of the health care team; patient assessment; use of the medical record, and respiratory care procedures for the medical/surgical patient. This course meets 8 hours/week for the final 8 weeks of the semester. RSC191 Respiratory Clinical I Minimum Grade of: C

This clinical course provides students with direct patient care experience in pulmonary function testing, airway management, arterial blood sampling, analysis and interpretation, and the use of respiratory care protocols. The course includes an introductory rotation in the initiation and monitoring of mechanical support of oxygenation and ventilation. PLEASE NOTE: CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and/or SORI (Sex Offender Record Information) checks are required prior to participation in this course.

This course introduces the student to advanced management of patients who are critically ill and require mechanical ventilation. Emerging modes of ventilation will be presented. Critical thinking and decision-making skills are emphasized.

This course emphasizes the role of the respiratory therapist in critical care. Course content includes electrocardiography, cardiac disease, hemodynamic monitoring, trauma, and critical care medications and their impact on cardiorespiratory function. The course focuses on critical thinking and decision-making skills within the context of the respiratory care plan.

Provides an introduction to respiratory care for neonatal and pediatric patients. Topics include neonatal and pediatric assessment, pathologic conditions specific to neonates and children, airway care, and support of oxygenation and ventilation.

This course builds on previous disease courses with emphasis on advanced diagnostic and monitoring and other specialty procedures. Clinical simulation scenarios will be used to reinforce critical thinking and decision making. Physician lectures are included from the program's medical director.
