Introduction to Theater has two general goals. First, to introduce the contemporary theatrical world: playwright, producer, theater structure, director, actor, technicians and designers. Second, to study plays as the basis of theater by reading and analyzing dramatic literature in class, and to attend performances.

The Improvisation Voice and Movement

Course Description
The actor's instruments are the voice and the body. Improvisation, Voice and Movement will isolate these areas to increase the student actors' awareness and to improve their ability to use their voices and bodies. Building on this increased awareness, the student will learn the rudiments of mime and improvisation. The ultimate goal of the course is for the students to be able to work together to create improvised scenes in front of an audience.

Course Description
Acting I is a performance based class in which students will work on exercises, scenes and monologues in order to better understand the vocal, physical and psychological techniques. Students will be required to memorize lines and movement, work with other students, participate in class work, take risks, write about the acting process and about performances outside of class. Acting I and Acting II need not be taken in order although Acting I can NOT be taken concurrently with Acting II.

Acting II is a performance class offering in-depth scene and monologue study emphasizing character development and script analysis. Various acting techniques will be discussed and utilized. Course objectives will center on the ability of the students to overcome fears and barriers, the development of confidence in public performance, and the ability to make creative choices. Acting I and Acting II need not be taken in order although Acting II can NOT be taken concurrently with Acting I.

Directing

Course Description
Students in Directing will direct a one-act play which will be performed before a live audience. Each director will be responsible for selecting a script (with approval of the instructor), research, analysis, blocking, casting and rehearsing it. Each director will complete a director's book, attend production meetings, respond to criticism and work with the instructor.

Stagecraft

Stagecraft is a hands-on course in which students will work on projects in set design, research and construction, painting and dressing; costume design, research, construction; lighting design, color, curing and operation; property design, research and construction; sound design, research, taping and operation; and/or stage management. The projects may be determined by the productions of the Top Notch Players and/or Dance Club. This course is offered only as a directed study.

Students who have been cast in or want to work on a Top Notch player's production are eligible. Student actors will be required to memorize lines and movement, analyze their characters, work with other actors, keep a journal, perform the play and respond to critiques. Student technicians will work on the set, lighting, costumes, sound and/or publicity. This course is offered only as a directed study.

Course Description
Students in Summer Theater will get credit for being in and/or working on a summer production. The goal of the course is to provide the student with a different perspective on production than that of putting on an extracurricular play. Modeling professional theater, the play is put together in a shorter period of time. Students will act, work on the set, lighting, costumes, make-up, choreography and stage management.
