Introduction to Basic Writing

3 Credit Hours, 2 Lecture Hours, 2 Lab Hours
Course Description
Designed to prepare students for success in the Basic Writing course (WRT010), this course will focus on sentence structure, punctuation and grammatical correctness; paragraph structure, development and style; and an introduction to the five paragraph essay. Instructors require 1/2 hour/week of additional lab. PLEASE NOTE: This course is a developmental course and DOES NOT carry graduation credit. It is NOT usually transferable. Since developmental courses are mandated courses, students who do not meet the exit criteria of C or better for Basic Writing will be required to repeat them.

English Writing Skills

Course Description
This course is intended to develop English writing skills, especially editing skills, in fluent, near-native English speaking bilingual or multilingual students. Topics include the minimal grammar knowledge necessary to find and correct most English errors for such students, as well as ways to develop and organize different genres of college-level essays, utilizing the principles of process writing, including pre-writing, drafting, revising and editing. This course requires approximately one hour per week of supervised work in a computer lab during class time. PLEASE NOTE: This course is a developmental course and DOES NOT carry graduation credit. It is NOT usually transferable. Since developmental courses are mandated courses, students who do not meet the exit criteria of a grade of C or higher will be required to repeat them.

This course, designed for students who need to improve the writing skills necessary to succeed in Composition I, emphasizes the composition of essays with further work on sentence and paragraph structure. Attention is also given to punctuation, grammar and spelling. Instructors require 1/2 hour/week of additional lab. PLEASE NOTE: This course is a developmental course and DOES NOT carry graduation credit. It is NOT usually transferable. Since developmental courses are mandated courses, students who do not meet the exit criteria of C or better for Basic Writing will be required to repeat them.
