Humanities, Open/Free

Introductory course examining various aspects of the Deaf community. Provides an overview of American Sign Language and the culture it reflects, various professions within the field of deafness, educational approaches/controversies, current events, the hearing mechanism and audiological assessment as related to the Deaf community.

ASL111 Advanced American Sign Language I Minimum Grade of: C and DST101 Introduction to the Deaf Community Minimum Grade of: C

ASL102 Elementary American Sign Language II Minimum Grade of: C

Provides general information about the field of interpreting, cross-cultural issues related to bilingual and bicultural mediation, and the role of the professional interpreter. Ethical standards as defined by the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf will be reviewed. Additionally, basic elements of the interpreting process will be introduced.

ASL111 Advanced American Sign Language I Minimum Grade of: C

This course gives students practical experience by placement in various settings in the Deaf Community. Students will develop both receptive and expressive skills as well as their knowledge of Deaf Culture through first hand interaction and exposure. PLEASE NOTE: CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and/or SORI (Sex Offender Record Information) checks are required prior to participation in this course.

ASL201 Advanced American Sign Language III Minimum Grade of: C

This course focuses on developing an understanding of process models and a broad base of competence in the analysis and consecutive production of equivalent messages. Students will work with rehearsed texts of short duration; skill practice includes monologues, dialogues, and frozen text.

ASL201 Advanced American Sign Language III Minimum Grade of: C and DST201 Consecutive Interpreting Minimum Grade of: C and DST291 Interpreting Practicum I Minimum Grade of: C

ASL202 American Sign Language IV Minimum Grade of: C

This course focuses on developing competence in the interpreting/transliterating process. Students will learn to simultaneously produce equivalent messages with rehearsed and unrehearsed texts. Additional emphasis will be placed on ethical and professional considerations of interpreting.

ASL201 Advanced American Sign Language III Minimum Grade of: C and DST201 Consecutive Interpreting Minimum Grade of: C

Students will be paired with a working interpreter, allowing students to put theory into practice by providing opportunities for observation in a variety of settings. PLEASE NOTE: CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and/or SORI (Sex Offender Record Information) checks are required prior to participation in this course.

ASL202 American Sign Language IV Minimum Grade of: C and DST202 Simultaneous Interpreting Minimum Grade of: C

This course provides advanced students with an opportunity to observe and function in actual interpreting situations with professional support and advice. Students will be supervised by working interpreters.
