This course introduces and examines the theory and practices associated with the field of Adventure Education (AE). Students will participate in an array of adventure activities and learn how to plan, organize and safely administer AE programs. Students will consider how recreation-based adventure programs may help improve physical fitness, self-esteem, communication skills, and team-work for groups of all ages. This course is composed of lecture, off-site adventure labs, and a term project.

This course introduces students to the theory and practice of participating in and leading aquatic exercise programs. Students learn the principles of exercise and exercise leadership as they apply in the water. The course will focus on improving muscular strength, aerobic fitness, flexibility, coordination and agility. Students learn to use aquatic exercise equipment and also are introduced to exercises for special populations, including chronic illnesses, injuries, and post-surgical conditions. The use of aquatic flotation equipment will be incorporated for deep water conditioning and pool resistance. Both swimmers and non-swimmers can participate in this course. Aquatic flotation equipment kit and pool fee required.

Based on the mind-body exercise system developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920's, STOTT PILATES is a series of exercises that emphasize strength, flexibility and endurance without risking injury. With a focus on core stability including pelvic and shoulder girdle stabilization, neutral alignment and patterned breathing, STOTT PILATES helps restore the natural curves of the spine, relieve tension and enhance self-confidence. The result: a balanced and aligned body that looks fit, feels revitalized and moves with ease. Other benefits from STOTT PILATES conditioning include linger, leaner muscles, injury prevention, improved balance and coordination, enhanced athletic performance, improved digestion and heightened mind-body awareness. Students should be a good physical shape and injury-free at time of class. A one-semester, 2 credit course.
