Sharing Books Using ASL and Deaf Cultural
Literacy Practices
Friday and Saturday September 25 and 26, 2009
This workshop focuses on how to share books using ASL and deaf cultural literacy practices with young deaf and hard of hearing students. Ideal for Teachers, Parents, Librarians, Aides, Day Care Providers, Interpreters, and Future Teachers.
Participants will learn to:
• Share books as a visual and spatial experience
• Translate English text into ASL in comprehensible ways
• Scaffold children's learning during book sharing
• Make connections between ASL and English within this context
Each literacy practice will be introduced and demonstrated, followed by opportunities for collaborative, guided practice using excerpts from
various children's books. Additional topics will include selecting appropriate books and materials, elements of ASL, and topics based on the students'needs and interests.

About the presenters:
Janet S. Weinstock teaches ASL & English, Deaf Studies, and Creative Writing at the Clerc Center’s Model Secondary School for the Deaf. She was Lead Teacher for Kendall Teams 1-2 and 3-4-5. She has conducted workshops and presentations on American Sign Language and English bilingualism and Deaf Studies for parents, professionals, and school-age students. She has taught courses in Children’s Literature, Putting Deaf Studies into Practice, Methods of Teaching Language and Reading, Storybooksharing Techniques, and Foundations in Deaf Education at Gallaudet University and McDaniel College.
Lynne C. Erting, PhD, is a teacher/researcher at the Clerc Center. She has recently completed a DVD, Beyond Strategies: Book Sharing the Deaf Way, based on her doctoral research findings for early childhood teachers and future teachers that explains and demonstrates how to share books in American Sign Language using
Deaf cultural literacy practices.
The Weinstock and Erting team taught for three years at the Clerc Center’s Kendall Demonstration Elementary School and have conducted joint workshops and courses.
