General NECC Scholarship opportunities listed below are for the 2013-2014 school year

Northern Essex Community College has a number of scholarship awards available to students from private donors, through the Office of Institutional Advancement located on our Haverhill Campus, Bentley Library – Room A317.

Please review all instructions and eligibility requirements prior to applying.

General Scholarships
(for registered NECC students only)
Scholarship Name Criteria Application link Deadline
Friends of NECC Scholarship (170 awards available from $250-$1,500) Applying for this scholarship will automatically make you eligible to be considered for one of 170 NECC awards in addition to the separate optional ones listed below (INCLUDES PACE SCHOLARSHIPS)
  • Must have 9 credits completed at NECC by end of Fall 2012 semester
  • Minimum GPA 2.5
  • Register for Fall 2013 semester for a minimum of 6 credits by May 17, 2013.
  • Complete online scholarship application form
  • Submit letter of recommendation (faculty or advisor preferred)
  • Second essay/separate from that on application, if required

Dr. John Spurk Memorial Scholarship
($500 award)
Check the box on the NECC Scholarship Application
  • Must have 12 Liberal Arts credits completed
  • Minimum GPA 3.2
  • Register for Fall 2013 semester by May 17, 2013 with minimum 6 credits (only if returning student)
  • Liberal Arts major
  • Merrimack Valley resident
  • Complete online scholarship application form
  • Submit letter of recommendation (faculty or advisor preferred)
  • Additional essay: 200-500 words: “How may a student use his/her education to improve his/her life and the world in general and make a contribution to society?”

President Emeritus Harold Bently Memorial Scholarship
($500 award) Check the box on the NECC Scholarship Application
  • 10 minute oral presentation required (if selected as finalist.) Topic: To address how you have overcome life’s challenges in order to get an education. Please give examples of community service.
  • Faculty or staff recommendation
  • Must have 15 credits completed
  • Complete online scholarship application form
  • Register for Fall 2013 semester by May 17, 2013 with minimum 6 credits

Covanta Energy Corporation Scholarships
($1,000 award)
Check the box on the NECC Scholarship Application
  • Must have 9 credits completed at NECC by Fall 2012 semester
  • Minimum GPA 2.5
  • Register for Fall 2013 semester by May 17, 2013 with minimum 6 credits
  • Complete online scholarship application form
  • Additional essay: 250 words “How would you raise awareness & encourage people to be environmentally friendly?”
  • Haverhill resident
  • Eligible majors: AS in Natural Science Options, Laboratory Science or Engineering Science

Honors Experience Scholarship
(Starting @ $250) Check the box on the NECC Scholarship Application
  • Fall and/or Spring
  • Honors Experience student only
  • Must have 9 credits completed at NECC by Fall 2012 semester
  • Minimum GPA 3.3
  • Register for Fall 2013 semester by May 17, 2013 with minimum 6 credits
  • Complete online scholarship application form
  • Additional essay: 300-500 words “How has participation in the Honors Experience enhanced your educational goals?”
  • Must have completed one honors project or honors course
  • Must complete another honors project or honors course either in the fall or spring semester

Incoming Freshman Scholarship
(for registered NECC students only)

  • Must be nominated by alumna/us
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA from high school
  • Official transcript required
  • Minimum 9 credits for Fall 2013 semester
  • Reference from teacher or school guidance officer
  • Typewritten essay listing: educational goals / career goals, extra-curricular or athletic activities, community/church involvement, hobbies or special interests

General requirements:

Please review all instructions and eligibility requirements below:

  • Must have 9 credits completed at Northern Essex by the end of the Fall 2012 semester
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Register for Fall 2013 semester for a minimum of 6 credits by May 17, 2013.
  • Completed application forms should include:
  • Check off personal information boxes on application form (some scholarships require this voluntary personal information)
  • Second Essay if required
  • Answer 2 essay questions on online application
  • Letter of Recommendation
    • This can be from a current or past faculty member, advisor or employer (no family members). Ask the person writing the letter to email it to scholarships@necc.mass.edu or mail to Institutional Advancement, Northern Essex Community College, 100 Elliott Street, Haverhill, MA 01830 by April 12, 2013.

You must register for fall classes before your application can be reviewed by the scholarship committee.

  • If you drop below the scholarship award minimum of six (6) credits by the end of any term for which you receive a scholarship award, the award will be rescinded and you will be billed for that term.
  • If at the end of the Spring 2014 term funds are unused, they will be rescinded; at no time will scholarship award funds be given directly to a student.

Applicants usually receive notification by the beginning of July. Recipients must write a thank you note for the donor, as well as return a signed letter showing they agree to the terms of the award.

Awards usually are sent to the NECC Bursar’s Office after the fall add/drop period to be applied directly towards student bills for tuition, fees, books and health insurance.
