Financial Aid

The function of the Financial Aid is to provide information about student financial assistance programs for those students who would otherwise be unable to attend college because of economic limitations. Based on an individual's financial need, Financial Aid allocates funds to assist eligible students in paying for the cost of their college education. Assistance is provided through several sources and a student may receive a combination of more than one type of aid. The amount and type of financial aid a student receives is subject to the allocation levels of the various aid programs and is governed by federal, state, and college regulations. A student must be enrolled in a degree of certificate program in order to receive financial aid.

Applying for Financial Aid

To apply for all financial aid funds awarded by NECC, a student must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and a verification worksheet. Other documents may be requested as necessary. Applications are available year-round; however, due to limited funding, students are urged to apply early.

How Need is Determined

Financial Aid is awarded on the basis of financial need. Financial need is the difference between the estimated cost of attendance and the calculated amount the student and family can reasonably be expected to provide based on the FAFSA. The estimated cost of attendance includes tuition, fees, books, room and board, transportation, supplies, and personal expenses. The student and family contribution is affected in part by the taxable and untaxed income, assets, number of dependents, number in the household, the number of family members in college.

Withdrawal/Nonparticipation

Students who withdraw completely from the college or are dropped by instructors for non-participation after the refund period can only receive a prorated amount of financial aid based on the number of days actually in attendance at the college.

If a financial aid recipient withdraws from ANY class, the original amount of the award may be decreased and may not cover all college costs. The student is responsible for paying any balance caused by a decrease in the original total enrolled credits. The Non-payment policy of Northern Essex Community College will apply to these students.

Non-Payment Policy

Students with unpaid debts will not be permitted to register for future semesters. Furthermore, after diligent efforts have been made to collect delinquent debt, including turning accounts over to a collection agency, the College may also refer the debt to the Commonwealth's new Intercept Program which intercepts payments to the debtor by the Commonwealth as well as state income tax refunds being issued to these individuals.

How do I pay for my books?

Eligible students who have completed their financial aid file will receive a letter from the financial aid office shortly before the start of the term, indicating the amount of bookstore credit they will receive to buy textbooks.
