MODEL UN AT NECC

Students from Haverhill High School, North Andover High School, North Andover High School, Timberlane Regional High School, Mascanomet Regional High School, Reading Memorial High School and Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School participated in a Model United Nations Conference at NECC on January 3rd and 4th, 2007.  The conference is in its second year at NECC. Over 150 students participated in six different simulations, examining current international problems.  Faculty from NECC's Department of History, Government, Philosophy, and Economics and other local colleges served as judges for the event, held at NECC's Technology Center.

 NEW FACULTY

This year, we are pleased to welcome a new full-time faculty member, Stephen Slaner who will be teaching American Government and Politics and Introduction to Political Science. Steve comes to us with graduate degrees from Columbia and Harvard.

STUDENT INTERNSHIPS

The Department continues to maintain an internship program with the Lawrence Heritage State Park and we hope to expand this opportunity to other museums and history resources in the Merrimack Valley. In addition, we continue to offer opportunities for government and law students to work as interns in the office of Haverhill Mayor James Fiorentini and the local offices of Congressman Marty Meehan. In conjunction with the Massachusetts Community College Council, we have also placed interns at the State House working with individual legislators.

Students interested in interning in the spring should contact Professor Steve Russell at (978)556-3237 for information. It is possible to perform such internships as an integral part of a class, for extra credit, or even for a full course credit as a cooperative education course.
