Silvia Serrano of Stoneham was recently appointed director of community relations at Northern Essex Community College, Lawrence Campus. She will serve as a liaison for the college in Lawrence and its surrounding communities.

In this role, Serrano will cultivate relationships with community, ethnic, civic and cultural groups. In addition, she will represent NECC at community meetings, events, gatherings as well as participate in relevant coalitions and networks to build and strengthen the college’s partnerships.

Serrano will also be responsible for leading community service opportunities for NECC students in the community, churches, social and health agencies, parent and community groups and organizations as well as training, managing, and serving as a role model/mentor to those student volunteers.

“I look forward to being a strong advocate on behalf of the college, by continuing its mission of investing in local residents and community organizations,” says Serrano. “Together we can create strong partnerships and help make Lawrence a vibrant urban center of success”

Serrano, who is bilingual, holds a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Behavioral and Social Sciences from Boston University’s School of Public Health. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Community Planning and Service Management from the University of Massachusetts Boston.

With more than a decade of supervisory experience as well as experience in program planning and management, database development, management, and analysis, fund raising and grant writing, she is a welcome addition to the NECC staff.

Most recently, she worked as a program specialist for Justice Resources Inc. with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health which was tasked with strengthening the state’s public health infrastructure by promoting shared services and staffing among municipalities.

Prior to that, Serrano was an outreach and recruitment coordinator at Boston University’s School of Medicine.
