A "Grassy" Planter

Create an easy to care for pot using ornamental grasses for a wonderful long-lasting 3 season planter. You will love the delicate waving plumes and leaves on your porch or patio. Learn to plant an arrangement with 3 varieties of flowering grasses and 2or 3 colorful perennials. Learn about annual & perennial grasses and how to grow them. $39 materials fee paid in class.

Drying Flowers and Preserving Leaves

Learn how to pick and preserve flowers, herbs and sprays of leaves to use in dried flower arraignments for fall and winter decorating. The class covers air-drying, drying with desiccants, dehydrating and preserving leaves with glycerin. Each student will receive detailed lists of plant material that dries well, a bottle of glycerine, canning jar and sprays of leaves to preserve at home.  A $20.00 materials fee covers all supplies.

Summer Flower Arranging with Herbs

Create a beautiful arrangement for your home with fragrant  herbs and garden flowers.

Sprays of herbal flowers and leaves are delightful, long-lasting additions to fresh flower arrangements.

Learn when and how to cut garden flowers for arranging, which herbs work well as cut flowers and how to choose fresh flowers at the supermarket and  florist. A materials fee of $ 34.00  collected in class covers all materials, container and handouts. Students will choose from a selection of glass containers. Be sure to bring floral scissors to class.

Glorious Autumn Pot  

Plant a pot that captures the glory of autumn in New England.  Fill a 12” pot with brilliant mums, richly colored kales, miniature evergreens, English Ivy and other hardy plant material.  With proper care your autumn pot will brighten your doorway or patio until Thanksgiving.  $38 materials fee paid in class.

Fairy House & Garden in a Basket    

Are there fairies at the bottom of your garden?  Possibly, but even if there aren’t, it is great fun to pretend!  Using bark, leaves, twigs, and other natural materials, create a little home that any fairy would be pleased to move into.  Once the house is built, the landscaping can begin: layout paths, design a garden, and put in a pond.  The construction site is a basket that is easily carried home.  $29 materials fee paid in class.

Herbs for the Kitchen: Preserving Summer’s Herbs for Winter Use

Gardens and farmstands are brimming with fresh herbs, so now is the time to prepare for winter cooking and holiday gift giving.  Learn to dry & freeze herbs, how to make mustard butter, vinegars, jellies, flavored nuts and pestos with fresh herbs.  Sample each recipe demonstrated & then make your own herb vinegar & herb butter to take home.  $26 materials fee paid in class includes food, supplies & Betsy’s book, Mrs Thrift’s Cupboard, a collection of tried & true herb recipes for the time-challenged cook.

Heirloom Pumpkin Harvest Centerpiece

Heirloom pumpkins are flatter then traditional orange Halloween pumpkins and come in shades of green, cream, purple, and orange.  Uncut heirloom pumpkins make an elegant base for a striking harvest arrangement of dried flowers, herbs, grains, pods, vegetables, berries and preserved leaves all nestled into a bed of green moss.  This class requires a glue gun, so please be sure to bring one with extra glue sticks and floral scissors. $37 materials fee paid in class.

Apples, Apples, Apples!!!

Apples, one of our most ancient and useful fruits, apples have played important roles in fall and winter celebrations for centuries. Pies, sauces, & cider appear on New England tables every autumn. Come make apple candles to decorate your seasonal tables, spicy apple pomanders for gifts, apple-cinnamon ornaments and fresh Winter Apple Potpourri. This is a fun messy class so be sure to wear old clothes. $35 materials fee paid in class.

Make your own fresh potpourri filled with the evocative scents. Clip fresh evergreens, sweet bay and rosemary to create a fragrant base, then personalize yours with spices, dried fruits, nuts, flower petals, essential oil, and scented cones.
