MASSACHUSETTS STATE ASSESSMENT POLICY

Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education has mandated that basic skills tests are REQUIRED for purposes of appropriate course placement and proficiencies for students registering for credit courses.  You will not be allowed to register until you have completed the testing.  Testing is required for ANY of the following:

  • If you enroll in a degree or certificate program (If you plan on enrolling into a program of study, want financial aid, or are planning on taking more than 3 classes this semester and have not yet applied to the Office of Admission , you must go speak with an Admissions representative prior to participating in an Assessment/Orientation.)
  • If you enroll in any math, developmental reading or English Composition I course
  • Before you complete six credits
  • Testing will be completed on our newly implemented and mandated CPT Accuplacer testing system.

Reading Proficiencies

 

The ability to demonstrate Basic and/or College Level Reading skills as measured by the following:

 

Basic Reading Proficiency

      • Assessment placement above Basic Reading and Basic Reading Lab
      • Completion of a Basic Reading course and a Basic Reading Lab course or higher with a grade of C- or better
      • Reading Waiver

College Reading Proficiency

      • Assessment placement above College Reading and College Reading Lab
      • Completion of a College Reading course and a College Reading Lab course with a grade of C- or better
      • Completion of two reading content courses with a grade of C or better
      • Reading Waiver

 

Reading Waiver

      • Completion of two reading content courses with a grade of C or better
      • SAT Verbal score of 500 or better
      • Passed CLEP exam in two Reading Content courses

Reading Content Courses

Courses with the designation Reading Content are considered to be at or above the level of College Reading proficiency. Reading waivers shall be granted for students completing two or more of these types of courses with grades of C or better.

      • Completion of Basic Math course or higher with a grade of C or better
      • A total of three credits earned in a math course above Basic Math
      • Math Waiver

Basic Algebra I Proficiency

      • Assessment placement above Basic Algebra I
      • Completion of Basic Algebra I course or higher with a grade of C or better
      • A total of three credits earned in a math course above Basic Algebra I
      • Math Waiver

Basic Algebra II Proficiency

      • Assessment placement above Basic Algebra II
      • Completion of Basic Algebra II course or higher with a grade of C or better
      • A total of three credits earned in a math course above Basic Algebra II
      • Math Waiver

College Algebra Proficiency

      • Assessment placement above College Algebra
      • Completion of College Algebra course or higher with a grade of C or better
      • A total of three credits earned in a math course above College Algebra
      • Math Waiver

Math Waiver

      • A total of three college credits earned in a college level math course (Algebra or above) with a grade of C or better
      • Passed CLEP exam “College Algebra with Trigonometry” with score of 45 or better
