The flu (influenza) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, producing a high temperature, sore throat, running nose, headache, dry cough, and muscle pain. The illness is widespread, especially during the winter months. It can sometimes be fatal.
