Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA)
The Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA), formerly known as the Department of Public Welfare, is the state agency responsible for administering public assistance programs for needy citizens of the Commonwealth. Because DTA emphasizes temporary assistance, recipients are encouraged to participate in education, training and job search activities that promote responsibility and self-sufficiency. DTA provides services to more than 400,000 families and individuals across the state.

Food Stamps/Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
Food stamps/SNAP is a government assistance provided by the Department of Transitional Assistance to help low-income households in Massachusetts buy food. Food stamps can be used to buy almost any food item in any store where you would usually shop for food. Massachusetts’ residents who use food stamps can spend the money they save to help pay their other bills. Food stamps are for U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens, with limited income that buy food and make meals at home. People living in homeless shelters, group homes for the disabled, drug and alcohol treatment centers, and subsidized elderly housing are also eligible. Some people must work to qualify for food stamps, while others are exempt from the work requirement. To see if you are eligible, go to the provided website and fill out the eligibility survey.

Greater Lawrence Community Action Council
The Greater Lawrence Community Action Council (GLCAC) originated in 1965 as a means of fighting the war on poverty. The primary purpose of the GLCAC is to encourage and promotes the improvement of community life in the Greater Lawrence area with special emphasis on, but not limited to, the initiation of programs in education, social services, child care, health, housing, youth employment, and other related fields. Since its creation, the GLCAC has been a consistent partner in working with local, State, and Federal governments and private agencies in creating opportunities and providing hope for people living in poverty.

Pettengill House, Inc.
The Pettengill House, Inc. is a community social service agency that provides services to meet the growing needs of individual, children and families in Salisbury, Amesbury, Newburyport, Merrimac, West Newbury, Newbury, Rowley, Byfield and Groveland, including basic needs, emergency assistance, prevention education, case management, housing, community partnership and referrals, crisis intervention and more.

Project Bread funds over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and food banks all over Massachusetts. They run the only statewide hunger hotline that answers 37,000 calls a year from families in need. They work with schools to offer breakfast programs, and fund summer programs so that kids get a nutritious meal when school’s out. The first Sunday in May each year, they run the oldest continual pledge walk in the country, Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger.

Rockingham Community Action
Rockingham Community Action is an umbrella agency offering practical and immediate relief for senior citizens, families with young children and adults who find themselves in need of food and shelter whether from a natural catastrophe such as a flood or any other unforeseen or catastrophic event.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
SSI is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues and is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income and provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. SSI is an income based program that helps those who are in need. To check eligibility for receiving SSI, go to the provided website and fill out the Eligibility Survey. Social Security also provides disability benefits for those who are eligible.

The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is a religiously affiliated organization dedicated to meeting human needs without discrimination. This organization has created programs to aid in disaster relief, the fight against human trafficking, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and assisting others in finding missing persons. The Salvation Army collects donations from others in order to provide meals, clothing, toys, and other materialistic goods for families in need.

WIC (Women, Infant, Children)
WIC provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.
