Title V Project
In 2002 the Lawrence Campus of Northern Essex Community College was designated a Hispanic Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education and has received a five-year federal grant for $2.2 million. NECC is the only institution of higher education in New England to receive this designation. Institutional Development and Undergraduate Education Programs Grants are awarded to Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) to assist eligible Hispanic-Serving Institutions of higher education to expand their capacity to serve Hispanic and low-income students.
Under the direction of Mary Ellen Ashley, Senior Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Services this project allowed the college to hire more Hispanic faculty and professional staff, create a fully staffed Career Planning and Advising Center (CPAC) on the Lawrence Campus and increase the number of team-taught Learning Communities offered to students.
The overall project goal was to Improve Academic Performance, Retention, and Graduation Rate of NECC Hispanic Students.
The two main areas of the our Title V project were:
- The creation of a fully staffed Career Planning & Advising Center and the expansion of students services on the Lawrence Campus
- Increase the number of Hispanic faculty and develop new academic and instructional support opportunities
