Outstanding Alumni Awards

Now Accepting Nominations!

The Office of Alumni Relations is now accepting nominations for the annual Outstanding Awards. Awarded to a NECC Alumni and a Graduating Student, the Outstanding Awards honor individuals who have made significant contributions through their profession or community service that have improved their community.

The Outstanding Alumni Award is given to NECC alumnus who has achieved exceptional success in their profession and/or has made significant contributions to the community.

2013 Outstanding Alumni Award Recipient

Susan Bonenfant of Plaistow, New Hampshire was awarded the NECC Alumni Association’s Outstanding Alumni Award for 2013.

The award is given annually to recognize an NECC graduate who has achieved success in his or her career, is active in the community, and has given back to the college.

Bonenfant attended Northern Essex Community College from 1975-1976 before transferring to New Hampshire College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in accounting.  She has also taken several courses toward a graduate degree at Harvard Extension School. Susan is employed by Pentucket Bank, where she is the Vice President of Deposit Compliance. In her role at Pentucket Bank, Susan has been instrumental in the creation of the bank’s Identity Theft and Elder Services programs. Her effort in regarding the protection of senior citizen from financial exploitation has been recognized by state legislators as a model for other banks.   

Susan is active in the community and has received several honors for her service to the community.  In 2009, she was recognized in the Haverhill YWCA’s Tribute to Women.  Additionally, she serves as the Treasurer on the Board of Trustees for Girls Inc. of Haverhill. Bonenfant is also a member of the Merrimack Valley Elder Services Advisory Council and the Merrimack Valley Financial Crimes Network.

She has been dedicated to Northern Essex Community College, where she has served on the Alumni Association Advisory Board since 2005 is currently the financial advisor.  In the past she has also participated in career panels and spoke at a Women Leaders Panel in 2009 and has been a longtime supporter of the NECC Fund and the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. Susan was an active promoter of the 1st Annual NECC Campus Classic 5K and Fun Run, where she blogged about her training and race experience. 

2013 Outstanding Student Award Recipient

Mary-Ellen D’Angelo-Lombari of Methuen, Massachusetts received the NECC Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement from the NECC Alumni Association at NECC’s Convocation ceremony on May 14, 2013.

The award is given to a graduating student who has distinguished her or himself through academic achievement and involvement in either campus activities or community service.

D’Angelo-Lombari was recognized for her leadership on campus. This past year she served as Editor-In-Chief for the NECC Observer, the college’s student newspaper. During her time as editor, the paper was awarded a Gold Medal by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. She was also honored as the college’s Writing Awards for a Creative Nonfiction work.

She graduated with Magna Cum Laude with associate degrees in liberal arts with Information Technology Fluency and Writing.

In September she will attend Southern New Hampshire University to pursue her passion in writing.
