Building Improvements to Enhance Your Learning Environment!

The Spurk Building (Building C) will be undergoing renovations through August 2017. When complete, the building will feature renovated restrooms, new windows, central air conditioning and more!

Temporary Classroom/Office Relocations:

During construction, classes normally held in the Spurk Building will be moved to other locations including:

  • newly renovated space in the lower level of Opportunity Works, (HOW building), which is adjacent to our Haverhill Campus at 671 Kenoza Street (across from the NECC track and sports fields);
  • the A, B, and E Buildings on the Haverhill Campus;
  • the downtown campus buildings and Riverwalk site on the Lawrence Campus.

Food will be available in the Follet Bookstore located on the second floor of the Behrakis One-Stop Student Services Center and at vending machines around campus. Learn more about campus food locations and hours.

Spurk Building Improvements Include:

According to DCAMM, the goal of this project is to bring the Spurk Building into full compliance, updating it as fully possible with the available funds at hand. DCAMM has outlined what the renovations will include:

  • Restroom Renovations: Restrooms will be code-compliant and fully accessible. There will be unisex restrooms on the first floor, and all restrooms will have new plumbing, fixtures, accessories, finishings, and lighting.
  • Air Quality Improvements: The entire building will have a central ventilation system and air conditioning.
  • Window Replacements: All windows and all storefronts (windows facing hallways) will be replaced.
  • Accessibility Upgrades: Accessibility changes will be made to bring Spurk into full MAAB and ADA compliance, including new and renovated entrance ramps, proper door clearance, extension of the accessible parking lot toward the building, and new chairs, wheelchair spots, and companion seats for Lecture Halls A & B.
  • Safety Advances: Life safety changes will include additional fire protection, a sprinkler room, and stairwell improvements including the enclosure of the central stairwell.

The renovation is anticipated to cost $15.2 million and funding was received from a 2008 capital bond ($7.1 million) and deferred maintenance funding ($8.1 million) from the state’s Division of Capital Asset and Management and Maintenance (DCAMM).
