Massachusetts Community College Faculty Community of Practice Summer 2023

You are invited to join one of three Community of Practices (CoP) this summer to examine and improve your teaching. A CoP is a group of people who share a common concern, a set of problems, or an interest in a topic and who come together to fulfill both individual and group goals. The design of this professional development opportunity was created by the Faculty Development Team (FDT) which consists of community college faculty from across the state.

On May 31st from 9:00am-3:00 pm the statewide FDT is offering 3 CoP workshops. Each workshop runs for the full day and are offered simultaneously via Zoom.

The workshop descriptions are as follows:

1.) Introduction to Equity Minded Teaching
Faculty Facilitators: Rebecca Westphal, Cape Cod Community College Veronique Helenon, Roxbury Community College

In this introductory workshop participants will apply equity concepts, learn to identify and assess equity gaps in pedagogy and classroom management, consider how to build a welcoming classroom environment, and articulate how race matters in the classroom. We will explore how embracing student diversity enriches the classroom environment and bolsters learning through the engagement and incorporation of the cultural wealth that students bring to the classroom. This interactive workshop is designed to include discussion, reflection and work time so that faculty leave the workshop with some work completed and an actionable plan for their own course modifications for the Fall semester. Faculty will participate in an ongoing CoP which will include submission of modified course materials, an optional (strongly encouraged) synchronous Zoom meeting over the summer, and an asynchronous peer-review activity.

2.) Revising for a More Equitable Syllabus
Faculty Facilitators: MaryKate McMaster, Quinsigamond Community College and Fernando Castro, Northern Essex Community College

In this guided workshop, participants will learn about equity-minded syllabus design, engage in self-reflective activities, and begin to apply six easy tweaks to an existing syllabus. Participants will learn about and discuss a culturally and linguistically responsive inclusive pedagogy. Participants will review their own course syllabi, including layout/design, course policies, grading, attendance, deadlines, student-friendly language, and alignment with contractual elements of the syllabus. Participants will reflect on clearly communicating values to students through the course syllabus. During the summer, participants will work to revise their syllabus. Participants will send the first draft of their syllabus to the facilitators by July 15, the second draft by August 15, and the final draft by September 8th.

3.) Bridging Gaps between Theory and Practice in Understanding Course Progress and Outcomes Analysis
Faculty Facilitators: Mya Bowen, Roxbury Community College Adina Giannelli, Holyoke Community College

This workshop track will focus on course progress and outcomes analysis for faculty. Using an interactive, multimodal approach to faculty learning, participants in this cohort will critically examine student success through a qualitative and quantitative exploration of course progress and outcomes. Faculty will define course progress (and related concepts) and disaggregate course-level race/ethnicity data to analyze opportunities and challenges within their courses. Faculty will do a deep dive into their own course data in a theoretically rich, mutually supportive, and engaging environment. In Summer 2023, our CoP will conduct three (optional and recorded) monthly Zoom sessions (dates will be discusses during the workshop); participants will complete three corresponding course outcomes-related activities (determined by participants during the workshop), due to facilitators August 31.

General Description:
Each one-day interactive workshop is intended to support faculty to explore and practice the development or revision of course material from an equity perspective with other community college faculty across the state. Each is designed to include reflection and work time so that faculty leave the workshop with an actionable plan for their own course modifications for the Fall semester.

As fellow faculty, we understand summer is a time to rest and recharge. The summer CoP is designed with that in mind. After completion of the workshop on 5/31, faculty will engage in various check-ins in July and in August. There is a final meeting on September 8th from 1pm-3pm via Zoom.

In addition to the opportunity to learn and collaborate with faculty across the state, each faculty who completes the CoP will receive a stipend of $500.00 funded through the Higher Education Innovative Fund (HEIF) grant from DHE.

To register, please complete the Summer 2023 CoP Registration Form. For questions, please email Tricia Kiefer at tkiefer@hcc.edu. We hope to see you on May 31st!

All NECC participants will be compensated for their time and can let us know about their participation here: https://northernessex.wufoo.com/forms/zdi5op11cgsulm/
