Over a decade ago, in 2010, Lane collaborated with recently retired English Professor Suzanne Van Wert, researching the causes behind the growing achievement gap between men and women in higher education in America. At the time, women had already outnumbered men in college for more than thirty years, and for most of that time, had been outperforming them in degree completion.
Rather than making progress over the past several years toward closing one of the largest equity gaps that exists in higher education, we are falling farther behind, with both enrollment and completion for men declining during the last two economic recessions, and throughout the pandemic.
