Effective communication, in the workplace and in the community, helps make life easier and more enjoyable, and provides you greater opportunities for success. NECC offers a range of programs designed to improve your English language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Basic English as a Second Language (BESL) – Levels 3 and 4
This course prepares students to transition into the Academic ESL (English as a Second Language) at NECC. In this course for non-native speakers of English, students develop English Language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking for effective communication in the workplace and for everyday use within the community.
Course Information
Period: Feb 16 to June 3, 2021
Dates/Time: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, 16 weeks (no classes on Holidays)
Teaching Mode: remote
Cost: $260 (plus books)

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Free**
These FREE classes are for you if you have some English language skills but want to improve. There are three levels in the ESOL program, and instruction emphasizes these key skills areas:
- Language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening
- Advanced grammar
- Computer literacy
- Vocabulary for community, workplace, and educational settings
- Integrated online career exploration
If you participate in these classes you will also benefit from the services of a NECC advisor, who can help you establish a clear path to achieving your education and career goals.
You can also enroll in a Writing for ESOL class, which will help you improve your writing for the workplace as well as prepare you to enter Academic ESL .
ESOL has three levels of classes:
- Low Intermediate (Level 4)
- Intermediate (Level 5)
- High Intermediate/Advanced (Level 6)
The ESOL Program is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education – Adult and Community Learning Services.
