Computers for Older Learners – New

This class is designed for older learners who appreciate that today’s technology dictates the demand and need for computer knowledge, for people of all ages. Receive hands-on instruction and one-on-one attention. You are welcome, but not required to bring your own laptop or mobile device to class. The course will cover the basics of computers, such as using a mouse, touch pad and keyboard, adjusting the font to make it easier to read, and other adaptive techniques. Learn to use the internet for a variety of purposes, such as research, entertainment, reading, chat groups, ordering groceries, emailing and social networking with friends and family. Gain the skills to help protect your computer against viruses and learn about cyber security. Basics, such as organizing files, creating documents and attaching files and photos to emails will be covered. This course is a great way for you to feel relevant, become more independent and keep an active and engaged brain. Open for adult learners, age 40 and up.

Computer Basics: The Fundamentals

This hands-on course is a great introduction to personal computers (PCs), providing a solid foundation which includes a basic overview of computer hardware, security, networks, the Windows operating system and software applications. You’ll explore the use of email, the World Wide Web, browsers and search engines plus learn to create and manage documents, files, and folders. NOTE: Students can take Computer Basics: The Fundamentals without continuing on to Computer Basics: MS Office 2016; however, students who successfully complete both Computer Basics: The Fundamentals and Computer Basics: MS Office 2016 may also earn 3 credits (as the equivalent of CIS101) applicable toward their NECC associate degree or certificate program.

Students will be introduced to the Microsoft Office Suite 2016 of applications (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) with particular attention to Word. Students are encouraged to bring a flash/thumb drive to class to save their work. NOTE: Students can take Computer Basics: MS Office 2016 without having taken Computer Basics: Fundamentals; however, students who successfully complete both Computer Basics: The Fundamentals and Computer Basics: MS Office 2016 may also earn 3 credits (as the equivalent of CIS101) applicable toward their NECC associate degree or certificate program.

Managing Your Documents, Spreadsheets, Photos and Other Computer Files

Much of the time and effort you put into creating something, (a document, spreadsheet, presentation, database, photo, etc.) gets wasted if you can't easily find it again when you need it. Prevent losing work by using techniques covered in this seminar to create, maintain and back up your own computer file system.
