Culinary Arts

Our culinary arts classes will be offered in our new, state of the art, culinary center and classrooms in “The Heights” building at 101 Merrimack Street in downtown Haverhill. Our public classes offer “hands on” and classroom learning by industry professionals. Culinary classes will adopt a “Learn it by doing it” approach to the skills you need to impress family and friends at your next gathering.  Other classes will offer detailed instruction and professional certifications to enhance your knowledge on a specific topic related to food and culinary arts. As a new section of Northern Essex Community College’s Community Education, Food and Agriculture welcomes any suggestions and/or ideas for future classes that might interest you.

ServSafe Certification-Food

Safe food handling is critical to keeping customers and co-workers safe. Offered in association with the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, ServSafe is a comprehensive eight-hour course that provides an overview of basic sanitation policies and procedures and prepares you to pass the ServSafe Certification exam given during the last class. Students who pass the exam will be awarded the ServSafe Certification by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. Book must be purchased for the 1st day of class. Introduction to Beekeeping

There is a growing awareness of the critical role bees perform in our food supply chain. And the movement toward natural foods has heightened the demand for honey, the most natural sweetener.  These factors, among others, are expanding the interest in backyard beekeeping as a hobby and as a business. Whether you are motivated to “save the bees”, pollinate your vegetable garden, or collect honey to consume or sell, this course is for you! This introduction to beekeeping will teach you all of the fundamentals needed to set up your own backyard apiary. The class will consist of classroom lectures and video presentations, equipment demonstrations, hands on practices of setting up and managing bee hives throughout the seasons, and harvesting honey.

Date Night in the Kitchen; Couples’ Cooking Classes

Instead of making reservations at your usual spot, allow yourself and your date (or friend) a chance to cook together in pairs. Summer Herbs from Garden to Kitchen; Putting Inspiration and Fun into the Kitchen

Food & Wine Pairing

Wine and food are natural partners, each with complex flavor profiles that change the other. We all know that white wine goes with fish and red wine goes with meat, but what else goes together? Learn what happens when you pair certain wines with certain foods and decide which pairings you enjoy most.

This class guides you through choosing the perfect pairings for any occasion as well as providing the key characteristics of grape varietals and the principles behind pairing them.  Learn why certain combinations work and some do not, how to avoid common pitfalls, and how to develop successful food and wine pairings on your own.

You will be tasting food & wine in class, but this is not dinner. We suggest having something to eat before class. You must be at least 21 years old to take this class.

Instructor: Denis Boucher, Program Manager for the Hospitality and Culinary arts programs at Northern Essex Community College.
