fb-logoNorthern Essex Community College students were awarded approximately $200,000 in scholarships for the 2016/2017 academic year.

“Our students are deeply appreciative of the many generous individuals and organizations that make these scholarships possible,” said Jean Poth, vice president of institutional advancement. “For many of our students, a scholarship is what allows them to stay in school.”

Scholarships range from $250 to $5,000 and come from a variety of sources, including private donors, memorial donations, local businesses, and private foundations.

There were several new scholarships this year; the Tallman Ophthalmic Scholarship, the Geraldine Murphy Scholarship, the Joanne Petrillo Memorial Scholarship, and the North Shore Bank Scholarship.

The Tallman Ophthalmic Scholarship at NECC is awarded to an ophthalmic or health science student who resides in the Merrimack Valley. This scholarship was made possible through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Carter B. Tallman.

The Joanne Petrillo Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of Joanne Petrillo, who was a graduate of the Practical Nursing Program at Northern Essex.

The Geraldine Murphy Scholarship is awarded on behalf of the NECC Foundation, Inc. to recognize and honor Geraldine Murphy in her role as president of the Women of NECC since that group’s founding.

The North Shore Bank Scholarship is awarded to a student who resides in the North Shore Bank service area.

“Establishing a scholarship can be a very appropriate way of honoring an individual,” said Poth. “A scholarship also is a very effective way of giving back to the community since the great majority of our students are from the Merrimack Valley.”

To establish a permanent endowed scholarship, donors must make a minimum pledge of $10,000. For more information, contact Poth at 978 556-3624 or jpoth@necc.mass.edu.
