NECC Students Can Transfer to Maine School and Stay at Northern Essex

Submitted by on July 5, 2011 – 3:25 pm

A new transfer agreement between Saint Joseph’s College of Maine and Northern Essex Community College will allow NECC students to complete one of eight bachelor’s degree programs offered by Saint Joseph’s College Online without leaving NECC.

Under this new partnership, students can remain at NECC, earn one of nine specific associate degrees and then complete two additional two semesters at NECC prices while concurrently matriculating and registering at Saint Joseph’s, located in Standish, ME. The fourth year will be completed through Saint Joseph’s College Online.

Bachelor degree programs offered through Saint Joseph’s include business administration, health administration, criminal justice specialization, human services specialization, adult education & training specialization, psychology specialization, nursing to BSN (or MSN for qualified applicants with BS degrees), and radiologic science administration.

“The benefit of this type of partnership,” says Grace Young, Northern Essex’s dean of academic advising, articulation, testing, transfer and TRIO, “is that it offers a truly seamless transfer of NECC credits above and beyond the associate degree to another institution.”

To qualify, students must apply to Saint Joseph’s and submit official transcripts, follow course requirements as outlined in the degree plan, earn a grade of at least a C in all transferable courses, and complete a minimum of 33 credits through SJC.  Applicants may apply for admission at any time in the year. Courses begin August 31, Jan. 31, and May 31.

“We are really excited about this partnership,” said David Watson, director of general studies in the division of graduate and professional studies at Saint Joseph’s. “It offers Northern Essex students a low cost, convenient, and flexible option for continuing their education.”

Northern Essex has now entered into transfer agreements with more than two dozen public and private universities to offer its students bachelor degree completion programs. Two through Fitchburg State University and one through Salem State University are offered on the NECC campus. Just Westfield State and Saint Joseph’s are offered online.

In addition to many state colleges and universities NECC has transfer agreements with Merrimack College, Southern New Hampshire University, Suffolk University, Northeastern University College of Professional Studies, Palmer Chiropractic College, Hesser College, and Chester College, to name a few.

Transfer Agreements are official agreements entered into by two colleges based on program content. The general premise is that the four-year college/university agrees to accept a program in its entirety or a major portion of a specific program into the bachelor level of a comparable program. Agreements vary depending on programs and schools.
