Northern Essex students Nabil Saleh of Methuen and Hillari Denny of Merrimac have been selected as the first-ever recipients of the Leewood Realty, LLC Sustainability Scholarship, an award developed this year as part of an expanding partnership between Leewood of Haverhill and Northern Essex Community College. The $1,000 scholarships will help defray tuition costs for sustainably-related classes and programs for both students.

Saleh, a mechanical engineering major, was recommended for the scholarship by engineering faculty.  He currently holds a 3.96 GPA and works as a Haverhill campus math center tutor. Upon receiving his associate degree, Saleh plans to attend UMass Lowell and eventually pursue a career as an engineering firm manager.

Denny is as a work study student with Northern Essex’s Top Notch Players theater troupe and was selected, in part, due to her knack for multi-tasking on challenging projects. An engineering major, she is a self-described outdoorswoman and passionate conservationist who is determined to make a positive impact on the world.

Owning and operating a 103,000 square foot affordable green industrial space with over 2,200 solar panels, Leewood Realty is home to the largest source of solar energy in the Merrimack Valley. The company recently worked out a net metering purchase agreement with Northern Essex, which will result in significant energy cost reductions for the college.
