Language Proficiency Testing Policy

Students who seek credit for foreign languages outside of the traditional classroom environment may do so by three methods offered through Prior Learning Assessments. Credits are accepted pending sufficient test scores, program requirements, and the discretion of the appropriate Academic Dean as follows: College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Exams.

Northern Essex will accept 6 or 9 credits* pending sufficient test scores for the following languages through the College Board CLEP exams:

  • French Language
  • German Language
  • Spanish Language

Northern Essex will accept 6 or 12 credits pending sufficient test scores for the following languages through the College Board CLEP exams:

  • Spanish Language with Writing

Brigham Young University (BYU) Exams: Northern Essex will accept a maximum of 9 credits* for demonstrated language proficiency exams through BYU if there is no equivalent foreign language course offered at NECC for the following languages:

The number of credits accepted is based on individual performance and based on individual exam criteria through College Board CLEP, NYU, and BYU. Credits awarded through these methods may not be transferable and it is the student’s responsibility to check with the institution for which they wish to transfer before testing and attempting to transfer credit.

Students who wish to utilize foreign language credit at NECC should consult with their academic advisor before attempting credit through alternative methods of assessment. Not all credits may apply to degree programs or individual academic plans.

The Academic Placement & Testing Center administers CLEP exams and BYU exams. NYU administers its exams, and Northern Essex Community College will accept an official score report from NYU to accept credit.

Payment for foreign language proficiency exams is non-refundable.

Foreign Language Achievement Tests – BYU

Students who know a foreign language may earn up to 9 credits for their foreign language skills. The test is offered in more than 50 languages. Northern Essex Community College administers Brigham Young University Foreign Language Achievement Tests (BYU FLATS). To request Language Achievement Testing from BYU.

  1. Complete the Proctored Testing Services Request form.
  2. Submit your non-refundable NECC Proctored Testing Registration Fee of $85.00 (if the institution is in the U.S.) or NECC Proctored Testing International Registration Fee of $100.00 (if the institution is outside the U.S.). Submit your payment: 
    • Online – Pay through our Online payment system to pay your fee by credit card (preferred method).
    • Mail-in – Mail-in by money order only, made payable to NECC, for $85.00 (for an institution in the U.S.) or $100.00 (for an institution outside the U.S.) 
  3. Go to BYU FLATS to register and pay for your BYU FLATS exam and follow the outlined steps below.

Type in NECC ID number
Click Continue

Once you complete the registration and payment, we will receive the exam information and follow up with you to schedule your BYU test date.

Proficiency Testing – Foreign Languages – NYU

Measure your Proficiency in a Foreign Language through the language testing services offered at the NYU School of Professional Studies. The 12-point exam is offered in more than 50 languages and can be used by universities to grant academic credit or to grant you advanced placement in your language of study. The test also may be used for professional purposes, such as teacher certification or to establish linguistic competence for business objectives.

  1. Go to NYU’s Online Language Proficiency Testing Services to register for an online in the foreign language you would like and click on the 12-point exam option. Click More details to get all the necessary information to test online through NYU. Click Add to Cart and follow the instructions.
  2. Once you complete the NYU Online Language Proficiency Test (12-point), you will need to request your results or call 212-998-7030 to have your results sent to Northern Essex Community College, 100 Elliott St., Haverhill, MA  01830, Attn: Donna Felisberto or dfelisberto@necc.mass.edu
