NECC’s soon-to-be comfort dog is making her name known! Meet Winnie!

CRASE Course – April 22, April 24

This is NOT a simulation. This will be held by officers from the NECC Police department. The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) course, designed and built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend (ADD) strategy developed by ALERRT in 2004, provides strategies, guidance, and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. Topics include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, civilian response options, medical issues, and considerations for conducting drills.

Speechapalooza to be held April 25

Speechapalooza, an event celebrating student speech, organized by students in the Principles of Public Relations, will be held in Spurk Building’s Lecture Hall A, Thursday, April 25, from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Students are encouraged to participate in the activities of Speechapalooza and incentives for participating are included but not limited to eating free pizza as well as possibly winning a prize. For more information about the event itself please contact Professor Mary Jo Shafer at mshafer@necc.mass.edu. Students are still recruiting student participants so if you are interested in participating, please get in touch.

Meet Winnie, NECC’s Comfort Dog!

Meet Winnie!

Just nine weeks old, this beautiful Yellow Labrador Retriever will soon serve as a comfort dog for those us who can’t help but feel our stress and troubles melt away (at least for a moment) when greeted by this kind and loving creature.

She heads off for basic training on April 22nd. Wish Winnie well!

The final submission deadline to the 2024 issue of the Parnassus Literary Magazine is April 14th, 2024 – spread the news! NECC students, staff, and faculty can participate. Spring Break Bookstore Hours

The NECC Bookstore will be open Monday, March 11 through Thursday, March 14, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be closed Friday, March 15.

Perfect Blend Café

During spring break, the Perfect Blend Café will be closed and the $3.00 meal will not be available.

Library Access to Databases During Spring Break

The library will be changing the way students, faculty, and staff access databases off-campus during spring break. You will now sign in using the familiar Microsoft authentication process. Please see the Library Database webpage for more information and updates.

Men’s Hoop Headed to National Championship Tournament

The Knights defeated Quincy College 80 to 69 in the Region 21/East District Championship hosted at NECC.

The national championship bracket will be announced Wed., Mar. 6.

The national championship tournament will be held March 13-16 at Herkimer College in Herkimer, NY.

CultureGrams Trial

The library is running a trial to the CultureGrams database, which contains primary-source reports on 209 countries and territories. The reports focus on 25 cultural categories, including language, personal appearance, greetings, visiting, family, life cycle and more. The trial runs through 2/28/24, and feedback can be provided on the website.

Local Finance Commonwealth Fellowship

Consider applying for the Local Finance Commonwealth Fellowship. This program partners with local government offices to provide students with finance and business experiences through paid internships in MA towns and cities. Search for this program in the “Jobs” category on Handshake. Apply by 2/16.

Do an Honors Project this semester

The Commonwealth Honors Program at NECC provides an opportunity to enhance a student’s learning experience. Working with your instructor, you have the semester to complete a research or creative project to receive the honors notation for the course on your transcript. 

The CHP is a great way to add to your academic credentials for transfer and scholarship applications, and allows students to transfer seamlessly to honors programs at any UMass campus or Massachusetts state university.

NECC Connect (with alumni!)

The NECC Alumni office is providing a new resource for students. An online mentoring opportunity that connects students with alumni willing to offer advice. It’s called NECC Connect.

A student simply submits a question, it’s then automatically sent to a pool of randomly selected alumni for a potential response. It could be a simple question like, “I’m considering a career in accounting, do you have any advice for a student considering this career path?”

The best part? There are no passwords or logins to remember!
