How Do I Enroll?
Step 1: Apply at NECC
Complete the free online NECC Application.

Step 2: Take the ESL Test
- Walk in to test in person.

- After the test, an ESL advisor will assess your listening & speaking level, discuss your results, and explain the next steps.

Step 4: Complete Orientation and Register for Classes
- Complete NECC’s Virtual New Student Orientation and Advising Program (or Orientación Estudiantil de NECC en Español).
- After you finish the orientation, complete the Orientation Completion Survey (at the bottom of the orientation website). Then a staff member will contact you to schedule a Virtual Advising Appointment to help you register for classes.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Academic ESL Curriculum
What Do I Need for Enrollment into Academic ESL Classes at NECC?
In order to take Academic ESL classes at NECC, you must have (1) a high school diploma or GED, (2) a completed college application, and (3) at least Intermediate scores on all parts of the NECC ESL Placement test.
What If My Test Scores Show That My English Is Below Intermediate Level?
You will be referred to our NECC ESOL program or a community program such as the Massachusetts Adult Literacy Hotline.
When Are the Classes?
ESL Classes are online, partially online, or in person. There are morning and evening options.
What Are the English Requirements for F-1 Visa Students?
Here are three different ways to show that your English proficiency is appropriate for college work:
- A TOEFL iBT score of 41 or higher
- A Duolingo English Test score of 70 or higher
- Take the NECC Placement Test in the Assessment Center if you are already in the United States.
What Is the Cost per Course?
Students are charged the regular credit hour rates of the college in ESL courses. Further information can be obtained from the Bursar’s Office. 978- 556-3900.
